My brief look at the Droid
OK, so I still have a voice plan with Verizon Wireless. I thought I would go and check out the Droid. Wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I wanted to see if it was as good as all the other bloggers said it was.
I was very disappointed. To say the least. I only used it briefly, but here are some of my dislikes.
The onscreen keyboard is a poor implementation to say the least. Some keys are narrower than other keys. The "I" key for instance. Because the letter is narrower, the key is narrower, making it harder to press the correct key.
The slide out keyboard, also leaves much to be desired. Here I was comparing it to a RIM device. The keyboard on a BlackBerry works very well. It has a slightly raised keyboard so you can easily tell that you are on a key. The Droid has all the keys mashed together, making it very easy to press the incorrect key.
The interface is not as nice as the iPhone, by any means. The original screens are about the same. The Droid has the ability to have "widgets" on the screen in place of some app icons. I suppose if you want to further limit the number of apps, this is fine. There are only three screens for apps as it is, so if you use any widgets, you limit the number of apps even further.
I then tried the Google map/directions app. My best report, the Android system is very confusing if you are used to an iPhone. with an iPhone all interaction is done in the app. Not so with Android. If you want to do anything, you must tap the built in menu button, and then choose from the possible commands. This is a lot like a BlackBerry, so if you are coming from there it might seam intuitive. But coming from an iPhone, or iPod touch, it is very hard to accomplish simple tasks.
So, my impression. Thumbs way down.
I actually went into the store with the idea of purchasing one of these to use with my existing Verizon Wireless plan. After ten minutes of playing with it, my mind was made up.
No way was I getting one of these. Second thought, the iPhone still has nothing to worry about.
